A couple web design goodies

For anyone interested or involved in the web design process, at some point you’ll come to learn the importance of grid systems. To help you begin the grid-tastic journey, here are a couple resources that surfaced this past week.

Subtraction

1) Subtraction has written about and released their presentation (pdf link) from a couple weeks back at SXSW. The pdf is a fantastic ice-breaker that’ll help you understand what grids are and slowly release the nitpicking designer within you.

Expression Engine

2) Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain discusses his design process for the recently re-launched ExpressionEngine website. Again, you’ll see how grid systems come into play but more importantly an inside look at the refinement process.

Does anyone here get into grids? It’s on my todo list still.

After reading that I’m excited to give a site a facelift and see how it works out. It’s pretty involved but it makes total sense. Thanks for the link T!

Great pdf for grids. Its funny as a designer you sometimes hate the fact that your work fits into mathematical units and is super structured. But you have to remember that sometimes the most beautiful things in the world that evoke lots of emotion still adhere to the golden mean which is another “mathematical formula”.

And if you run an information and content based site like the examples above, its even more important to improve usability.
