It is said that having an ego isn’t an option when you are an entrepreneur… it is a requirement.
Ego
From Dictionary.com
e·go [ee-goh, eg-oh]
–noun, plural e·gos.
1. The self, especially as distinct from the world and other selves.
2. In psychoanalysis, the division of the psyche that is conscious, most immediately controls thought and behavior, and is most in touch with external reality.
3.
1. An exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit.
2. Appropriate pride in oneself; self-esteem.
In any form of sales you need to have confidence. You have to convince another person in the value of the product you are trying to sell them. As an entrepreneur that product often isn’t a disconnected something, but your idea and a very personal part of who you are.
Confidence is an important key to success. You can have low personal self-esteem, and still having a break through product or idea… but being self-confidant puts another ace in your hand when it comes time to get others on board.
Having an ego helps you maintain your confidence in yourself and your idea, even after the 10th time you were told no by an investor or were told you were nuts by a friend or family member. There is a delicate balance though between having an ego and being an egotistic prick.
Being able to hear constructive criticism is crucial and sometimes having a little humility goes a long way.
Today is a good opportunity to remind yourself that you’re a genius and it is only a matter of time until the world knows it.
Cheers,
