Oh, the Old Gray Mare, She Ain't What She Used To Be

The more comfortable we get with new technologies, the more accustomed we get to looking for an easy solution to our problems. Not to say we're trending toward laziness or cutting corners to find an easier way out, I've just noticed that the ways of the olden days are in fact…old.

Over the holiday season, I had a few days off and used it to head back home to visit the family.

It was nice to see them again, as I work a lot and don't get many opportunities to head home (insert 'Cats in the Cradle' comment here). My dad works a lot too, he owns a small electrical contracting outfit. The night before Christmas Eve he got a service call. Now, instead of bothering his employees (who were with their families as well) to do the job the next morning, he got up at 6:30 the morning of Christmas Eve and did the job himself. He could have easily called up an employee to do the job for him, after all, he has the authority to do so.

Hmmm….

It got me thinking, the ambition that drives a man to wake up at the crack of dawn everyday for work for 35 years is becoming a rare commodity. These days, it's fairly common to call on someone else to do it for you

Magicbreakout Trading Strategy

. The line between worker and reliable worker is ever expanding as I've heard someone say so many times, “I wish I didn't have to work.

There is the possibility that my perception of today's work ethic versus the work ethic of yesteryear may be skewed because of what I was taught by people around me growing up. However, the lack of ambition, that I'm becoming increasingly aware of among younger people, is growing.

While catching up, my dad and I somehow stumbled on that topic. He shared the example of a kid he knows the parents of, missing school to play Xbox. That never would've happened when I was growing up……well, not without a swift kick in the pants.

Who knows? Maybe people aren't looking in the right places for motivation and direction. Time's have changed. What applied fifty years ago rarely applies now. Although, going back to your roots may not be a bad idea. As entrepreneurship evolves, so does the way we conduct our business. Keeping in touch with traditions and balancing business evolution could just help a few more people take pride in what they do.

When it comes down to it, there are many things that can set a fire inside someone, and ignite a passion to do something, and to do it well. Everyone will have a different way of going about it, it's just a matter of sifting through the dark to find that light switch.

WOAH!!! Dion comes out of the shadows to post!

Man I have seen the lack of work ethic in younger people. I am going to make sure my son has that taught to him, to work hard and smart. To be tenacious and never give up.

It’s always on the inside - and if people can’t find the switch there then they are just out of luck compared to the next person that can.

    Intrinsic motivation for the win.

I agree generations are getting lazier and lazier. People don’t even know how to change their own oil, patch a hole in dry wall or mow their lawn.

When it comes to business everyone wants a shortcut to success. I know I’ve been guilty of this as well. I think that for business owners getting your hands dirty is essential to staying on top of your game.

How about the education system? Why go to school when I can learn more online?

How about outsourcing? If I can free myself of operations, then I can focus more on strategy.

How about entertainment? Is it really as mindless as it used to be (i.e. gather round and let’s all watch the Beave) or is there actually some value in two-way interactions?

No doubt, I know a lot of lazy people, but let’s face it, the boxed world our parents knew just isn’t as stimulating as the pixeled planet we’ve come to embrace. (… just playing a little devil’s advocate of course ;)

I was actually thinking about this topic over Christmas as well. I think there are some people that will utilize new technologies to develop themselves and will change the world much like Andrew alluded to, but there are also a lot of young men and women that are flat out lazy, and I think it’s important to note the difference.

As entrepreneurs, it’s going to be really important for us to learn how to identify who is creative, innovative and hard working and who is just posturing. I want hard working and efficient partners on my teams.

Andrew, you’re absolutely right. It takes a lot more to become stimulated in this day and age. Some people just sit back and wait for it, some go out in search of it.

Some will also argue that the modern education system is just a funnel to pour out drones, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

It’s a shame that this behavioral trend is actually noticeable.

There is no flexability in the government run school system. Alternate schools offer more “life experience” classes which seem to help people more.

Government run schools set you up to be book smart and not street smart, which is crippling to a lot of people.

A combination of both is best, but I believe the government should add more programs about leadership and money management to start.

You can have all the knowledge in the world but if you don’t have the ability to channel it properly or relate to people you will find it hard in the corporate world after you leave school.
