Busted: Cheerleader Streaker Viral Video by Twentieth Century Fox

So who isn’t using YouTube to launch viral marketing campaigns these days? One of the most popular videos today and over 120,000 views… It took about 2 seconds into this clip to smell the funk of a marketing department. I wasn’t quite sure why a College or University would be using a female streaker as a marketing tool…

Who Else Was at This Game?!!!!!!

Well, none of us were… only the marketing department for a movie to be released next month by Twentieth Century Fox was there.

What Gave It All Away

New Kid on the Viral Block
I thought they taught this in Spam Marketing 101… if you’re going to try and market to a community… do it from a trusted account. All it would have taken was a couple weeks of random vlog entries from the submitters account to build a little more credibility. (Also heartlandhomie was a bit too much as a handle.)

Camera Angles

There are a couple moments where you can see that there really aren’t many people in the crowd or two teams on the field… or full crowd in the other stands.

A second video shows the empty stands across the way being mostly empty.

Too Obvious Narrator
OMG Check that out… OMG she is coming this way… OMG she is naked dude… OMG I love college! The narrator ruins this clip by making it totally obvious to us what is going on… It is like he is reading us the script… Actress will take off cheerleader outfit… Come up stairs… Run up stairs… Should have just let it happen with lots of “Dude, WTF?!… No Way Dude… No Way… Holy Shit Dude…â€?

Intro Image

The Why I Love College banner that starts off the clip screams of well organized marketing. Why would this kid take the time to create this image with all his College’s info on it and show it for a whopping 30 seconds before the streaking?

Blurry Bits

What self-respecting young man is going to take the time to blur out the good-bits of a female streaker? To the marketing dept. that made this video. Next time just make sure people’s heads are in the way of every money shot… maybe throw a nip-slip in there… look how much attention it got Janet Jackson.

Illogical Scenario
For those planning to do similar streaker virals in the future… Streakers run away from people to avoid getting arrested and or tackled. And a college football security guard is not going to miss the opportunity to take down a naked cheerleader.

What it Was a Viral Video For?

The Comebacks
Starring: David Koechner, Carl Weathers, Brooke Nevin, Jackie Long, Jesse Garcia
Director: Tom Brady
Distributor: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: 2007-10-26

How Much Does it Cost? Is It Worth It?

I would be very curious to know what the company charged that created this idea and produced the video. I’m guessing it was in the several thousands of dollars range… I guess only time will tell if it was all worth it.

Why do all viral video directors have trigger fingers with the zoom? Real, normal people filming a a surprising event do not pan in and out and shake the hell out of the camera.

    Nice Sherlock work Darius.

The idea might have come up from a great viral game for T-Mobile in England where one had to direct streakers across a football field with varying degrees of difficulty.
Marketing 101 should also state that it does not pay to take your prospects and clients for idiots.

Awesome catch - even the way the title on the video is written “All Proper Like I’m a Loser” gives it away. Maybe that was part of the plan all along, who knows.

Oh, and most folks in the stands don’t look like college kids.

    God damn blurry bits.

We are talking about the video aren’t we - isn’t that the goal of a viral? Looks like it worked, regardless of the manner in which it was seeded.
