Internet & Tech: Desired Domain

I've just recently come up with the name for a company I plan to open early next year. It'll be an online venture, so of course I'm hunting for the perfect domain for the company's name.
I can't give away the name of the company yet or my desired domain but I can tell you why I'm typing all this jib jab here. Someone already owns the domain. This is it's reg. info:
Created on..............: Fri, Dec 29, 1995
Expires on..............: Wed, Dec 28, 2005
Record last updated on..: Fri, Nov 12, 2004When you type the URL nothing loads. The Wayback Machine gives me a cheap text page website that was up back in 1998. And it has the profile of the staff on there, one is of the person who registered the site. The last capture of the page is from November 20, 2000 which was a page on greatdomains.com (a domain bidding site) with an asking price of $190,000.
Now, of course I don't want to have to buy out this domain from the owner, so this is where I need your advice. Should I wait until December and see if the owner doesn't renew it, or should I contact her pleading my young and cheap case and see if I can get it transferred from the kindess of her heart, or a couple hundred bucks?

Atleast till Decemeber before you plead.
If I had a domain that I had no intentions of keeping and somebody contacted me...i'd be seeing dollar signs.
If she doesn't want the domain, she'll let it expire.
If she doesn't let it expire, contact her and plead then.

Backorder it for 20 bucks. That gives you first dabs if they dont want it when it expires.

Backorder it, and if she keeps it then plead. You can wait until December at least.

Does back ordering ever work?
I thought cyber squatters were able to rab domains even if someone has it backordered. They run a script or something that catches the domains first.
As for this domain, it was registered 10 years ago and has been held onto for what ever reason.
I suspect the owner will renew it again in Dec, since they obviously keep renewing it.
What until Dec and see what the status is then.

Okay, thanks everyone. I'll let it sit and pray to the virtual gods of domanium. If I can't get it I'll come up with a different name for the company. How exactly do you backorder a domain?
Original Young Go Getter -
Use a service like www.pool.com or www.snapnames.com to back order the domain.
Keep in mind, if your back order is not successful you do not get your fee returned to you. Snapnames keeps your fee on file as a credit that you can apply to another backorder (not to a new registration though).
