I just started a forum where you can actually get your computer problems fixed online by remote control, by other people sharing their assistance (using Windows Remote Assistance).
    Its all totally free.

Im looking for suggestions, constructive criticism, and people interested in helping me get to the next level.

    Thanks!

That's a really good idea and actually has some revenue potential if it proves to be a valuable service that people can't live without.

What about people with Mac's? :)

    Thankyou for your responses!

I dont know if the Mac OS has something like Remote Assistance, and how much built in security it has. But, a subforum could certainly be setup for MAC assistance. Many subforums could be setup for many different kinds of remote desktop software and OS's, for that matter! All with the same theme - people wanting to help people using remote control.

Since your interested, I would ike to invite you both as fully priviledged admins to the forum. Its brand new so it really doesn't have any users yet. But Im trying to build a "business network" right now. Would you agree thats the way to start?

    Its here: livera.editboard.com
    Thanks!

    What about privacy?

How can I trust the person I am opening my computer up to?

copilot.com has a good client which lets the person being helped boot the helper at any time, and they can see everything that happens since it is based off VNC. They mentioned a mac client coming out but I'm not sure if it has been released yet.

Privacy/security seems to be the overwhelming concern of a system like this. It will be easy for people to come in and use it after millions have already done so. Its getting those first few people to have faith in it. I believe that with Ebay-like assistant rating/reputation ranking, combined with millions of users, it would be very solid.

But remember, with RA (and others like VNC) you can see everything thats happening on your screen, and disconnect instantly at any time! And, Microsoft built many features of security already into RA. For example, you can flag certain files, folders, directories as off limits in an RA session.

Personally, I dont think it would be any more risky than anything else.

I agree it could be fine with a reputation system, but the majority of the people using the service are going to be laymen and have no idea what RA is or how to tweak it so that does virtually no good in the grand scheme of things.

Laymen are what Remote Assistance is made for!
Microsoft made it to be plug-and-play user-friendly. And even then, techies have problems too, it could be useful for them too. Just because people havn't heard or used a product before doesn't mean it can't be adopted.

Ive been doing with with my friends for years, MSN messenger offers an Remote assistance feature with the ability to boot at anytime. Anytime they need help, we log on a fix their problems.
You can create a MSN alias, and help them through there. If your short on technicle support operators.. let me know. I'll roll up my sleeves.
