Advertising & Marketing: Talib Kweli - Original or hack?

    "Inspiration" seems to be the topic of interest around here lately.

    Having recently released his latest video, Talib seems to have found a little inspiration in the HP ad campaign.

    If an idea isn't imitated or mocked thousands of times (iTunes and Mac vs. PC ads) doesn't it feel like a bit of thievery?

    I don't know, I'm kind of stuck in the middle on this one.

    I think this was definitely INSPIRED by the HP commercial, otherwise very very coincidental. I do have to say that both are VERY well done, and I really enjoy Talib's music video. If anything it was inspired by the one and taken a step further.

    Assuming that Talib Kweli was indeed second (and perhaps not in production while the HP Commercial was) I'm gonna put my vote in for thievery. I'm not comfortable with calling this inspiration at all. It's just way too identical and I see very little distinguishing elements that don't mirror the original HP spot.

    Although I can conclude that it is a nice effect, I wonder how much inspiration Talibs camp would've got off the HP commercial if it hadn't had a big name in hip hop such as Jay-Z involved.

    Goodby, Silverstein & Partners released the the first Hands ad for HP well over a year ago. So there's no question that they created the style and came well before Talib.

    I'm sure if you were to ask Talib and his production team if they were inspired by those ads they wouldn't deny it or claim to have invented the style.

    In my opinion, production wise, the HP ads are much, much, better than the music video. Talib's was a bit sloppy at times and quite repetitive.

    I think maybe its one of those art trend thing going on. maybe thats the new video editing trend going around.
