Looking for thoughts on what you all think about the mystery shopping business. It's a simple, cheap, and easy start up and overhead is nearly nothing if I started by myself. Just exploring more ideas to get me out of the bar industry (which is where I am known and can tap that resource for potential shops...we just paid for one here last week)

Not bad. Decent money, flexable schedule and the companies each tell you what to look for when you are doing the shops.

It could be a nice idea if you can find the clients!

I think i can find the clients. Like I mentioned I already have an "in" with the bar scene here in Grand Rapids, MI. And the bar scene is only a small percentage of shoppable clients. Also a point of interest is that Grand Rapids is the second largest city in the state of Michigan...so there's a lot of potential clients!

Basic term: You go into one of a companies store, look like you are going to buy something, judge the results based on a scorecard the company provides after you leave the store and then you send it to the companies head office.

I see so basically you need some crazy connections to do this? How would you become a mystery shopper? Is it a mystery? (wow im soooooooo lame)

You dont really need connections for it. My bar hires out a third party mystery shopper at least once a month that none of us are connected to. You can become a mystery shopper by looking for ads on CList or in the paper. Or you can start your own ms business and be the person placing that ads looking for shoppers to do your work. Usually a manager will know that a mystery shopper will be in at some point in the day...but the idea is that nobody knows who it is or when so that everyone can get an unbiased view of the company and everything that goes onto a mystery report.
