I've had a great idea involving advertising but I don't think it will work. I'm looking for any suggestions on how to get it to work.

    Here's my idea...the pitch

Advertisements are everywhere. Everywhere. Go into your city centre and count how many adverts you see. Bus stops, building sides, everywhere big huge posters screaming for your cash. Well if, like me, you're feed up with it...help is at hand.

Lets remind these companies that we don't want to be smothered with advertising. We want to see nice things. Amazing things. Beauty. Not some mobile phone providers latest sale offers. So, what if there was a website that asked people for a small donation. With that small donation it would be collected and along with other small donations a billboard advertising in a certain town would be hired for a week.

In that week the billboard would have an amazing image. Not an advert, no text, just something beautiful. Amazing. Awe inspiring. An image we would all appreciate seeing for a week.

No advertising, no hidden message, just something beautiful and uplifting.

NOW....everyone I tell this idea to says, "hey, that sounds great" (as I hope you're thinking at the moment). But when I say, so would you donate they all say, ALL SAY, "no".

Thats why I think I have a good idea, but not one that will work.

Any suggestions on how to make it work?

I love advertisements, and I sometimes take photos of interesting billboards and other street-ads. I know many others who feel the same way too. It's just the boring annoying ads that people dislike.

I don't think anyone would want to pay a donation to see a beautiful pic up on a billboard. This culture is overloaded with high quality imaging at the moment.

Another point to note is that advertising makes the world go round. You don't want to kill something that does that.

It's almost like you are looking to start advocacy against horrible advertising. Start up a blog and lets post the pics and comment on the to try and bring awareness.

I would have a ton of pics for you with terrible advertising.

Say it through street art, don't pay into it. Then you'll just feel ineffective and out of some cash. Get a couple art friends to help you make a stencil and bomb it around. There's tons of anti-commercial pieces of street art, so you'll just have to make yours' stand out (but that goes for everything as I'm sure everyone on this site is aware).

What if you helped corporations organize projects where kids in inner city areas are given the tools to create great wall art around the city. Companies that do this sort of thing usually get good PR. Most companies are starting to value a mention in a popular morning show as much as a prime time commercial. You could help set up the entire project for these companies and make your city look nicer.
