    1) That was a reel cut. A long spot that'll be cut down to :30 for television.

    2) It's European, so there.

    3) The tone of the spot (voice over, music, and story) just didn't work together

    4) They should have just showed a collection of game clips for the length of the spot

    5) Doesn't even come close to being great, like the xbox 360 spots

I didn't like that - you only get game footage for the last 10 - 15 seconds, and really the whole boxing thing isn't very compelling. This doesn't make me want to buy a PS3, regardless of how edited down it might eventually be.

I agree with you both. I think the advertisement was horrible not to mention the gaming footage didn't impress me either.

The PS3 is in for a rude awakening when it launches. Sure, they're going to sell their release lot because the early adopters always bite. But when you can get a Wii and a 360 for the same price, there's no competition. Keep your Blu Ray and I'll keep my 360.

To put it lightly, it never grabbed my interest until I saw gameplay which was about 2 mins in.

Aside from that, smart move on sony's part to make the ps3 oddly shaped. That way you can't stack anything on top of it. only at the top, or completely out of the entertainment center.

This was the case with old school consoles that were top loaders. They advertiseds themselves everytime a person walked in the room. They were sitting on the floor with nothing on them, under them, or really around them. Just a SNES sitting there, BAM! Let's play...

But PS2, xbox, and xbox 360 all allow you to easily hide the console (ok not so much with the fridge sized xbox but w/e.)

Can't believe I just rambled on about the curved top of ps3. Haha

I reckon it's just another nail in the PS3's coffin... did a blog post a few days ago about it.

If Sony can turn around from this whole PS3/Blu-Ray launch it will be a miracle.

I don't think there's any question that PS3 is superior to 360 purely in terms of technology. The success will depend largely on the success of bluray and to what extent developers make use of the PS3's excess tech. Last gen, Xbox was technologically superior to PS2, but beyond minor upgrades like light effects there was no difference, certainly not enough to be a system seller. Halo was really the system's saving grace. Similarly, this gen, the minor technical differences shouldn't be enough to make Sony successful especially with the huge price difference. The only way I can see PS3 winning this generation is if blu ray really takes off and renders HDDVD either useless or obsolete, and even then it's iffy if you segment the "gaming" market versus the "entertainment center" market (an increasingly convergent group, but for now at least still somewhat different).

Back this up a few years when the PS2 was released before xbox. xbox won. It'll be interesting to see if this is the reason they've decided to release second. That or it's all of the immense problems they've been having with the development.

All that being said, Halo 3 will cause people like me to buy and xbox360 just to play it. I don't see Grand Tourismo 4 or 5 having that take on people.

xbox has a way way way better online following. I'd rather play Dreamcast online dialup that attempt sony's rendition of online gaming.

I don't mean this to sound like a ps2/3 bash, but they didnt advance the ps2 enough at the time to make me think 3 will be all that world shattering (which is basically what it takes these days in console gaming)

Blu Ray will end up in the exact same position as Sony's UMD discs and movies for the PSP, in the clearance baskets.

Never was a halo fan ;-)

Either way, considering 99% of the games developed for Xbox are also available on PS means that I'll be going with the system that has better hardware.

I should disclaim that I play a total of about 6 hours of games out of the entire YEAR, usually within the first few weeks of buying the system. After that, the system just turns into a dust collector or piece of hardware stuffed in the garage.

    HD-DVD all the way! :)

Actually I don't see why we need dvds that can hold 50GB+ ... can anyone find a reason?

I mean by the time movies and games start needing that much space we won't want to be carrying them around on scratchable discs.

50GB DVD's will probablybe used to hold things such as the Alien Trilogy, or other DVD combos on one disc, lIke say special order Scarface, Blow, and all of the GodFathers or something?

But you're right, I wouldnt want to scratch a $50 DVD

    Nado,

Do you mind elaborating on how you think things will be "transfered", if not by hard medium? With broadband becoming widespread and storage becoming so cheap, I can take a few guesses...

One of the models we have been looking at in my local think tank of software engineers is "data should be everywhere". Current model is fragmented - desktop, laptop, cell phone, PDA, and networked systems.

Well I think the next step in portable media will be using flash drives instead of scratchable cds/dvds.

Then yeah, once bandwidth becomes faster and cheaper the data will just be available wherever you can find wifi.

    I agree, terrible advert!

Focus on the content, the DNA visuals were a fine open and close but the guts of the movie should have been gameplay :)

Have you followed all the news on the blu ray stuff? The manufacturers are having loads of problems and are claiming they wont be able to support demand. Last I heard blu ray may not even ship with the PS3. That could have changed by now but I stopped listening after they missed their mark for the 4th time. Sounds like they Vista-ized the PS3.

I agree with you Travis, Blu Ray is dead - just like Betamax, UMD, and PSP Movies.

I just saw a Blu Ray dvd player on sale this week at Best Buy. $1299.99!!!!!!!!! Of course, it's normal for new products to be introduced to the market at a premium but that's insane. Great dvd players go for $150 nowadays. Much like how LCD has kicked Plasma's ass, DVDs will continue to whoop Blu Ray for many years to come.
