Wasn't sure what to title this... but I thought I remember someone posting something about Trendwatching on either this version of the forum or the last.

I could have sworn there was something in that discussion, or maybe in the Trendwatching article, about a small company that was putting displays in mall area that were like 50 boxes, large pidgeon hole type, with glass on the front and back that would rent space to local artisians, or really anyone who wanted to display a product.

Anyone know what I'm talking about and have a link?

Jason and I spoke about that idea many, many times. Here's the link:

    There it is!

I wish I understood more about the business. Do they take up a small retail space in say, a mall, and fill it up with the boxes with minipreneurs' products? Then do -they- sell the products for the minipreneurs? i.e. they have a cash register, they do the transaction, they charge a fee to the minipreneur + the $50/month rent fee? Or do you just display the items and the minipreneurs' information is listed to buy it from them.

I guess I was thinking this wasn't in a store format... like you could put it in the middle of a mall pathway, like a kiosk, but so much more cool looking, and simply display the items.

From my understanding and brief bit of research on the concept, it's a normal store within a mall that as opposed to buying merchandise to fill it's shelfs, it rents it's shelfs to the brands behind the merchandise. I think it's a radical idea for both the owner of the store and the merchandisers. It allows you to have a set income (amount of boxes/spots for rent X price per box) as well as enable small companies and experimental products to target their market without a huge commitment.

It's a concept that could be applied to any and every niche to some degree. Make one store for electronics, one for candy, one for jewelery, one for office supplies, one for anything and everything teenage girls, etc...

I've still yet to see anything like this in North America.

Okay so it rents to the brands/companies that have products. What do they put -in- the boxes? Their product... but it isn't sold? It is just for exposure?

The store rents the shelves to any company in their niche. That company can fill their shelf with whatever products they wish. You, the cashier, ring-in every single product right in the store. Whether it's from Nike, Adidas, or whomever, your dynamic inventory is all sold in store.
