Is anyone out there in the publishing biz? I got a reply from a publisher in the last couple of weeks regarding the manuscript I sent in, and they want to set up a meeting with me... what is there that I have to look out for whe dealing with these people? Anything? Thanks, any input would be appreciated...

I wouldn't have the slightest clue...I even tried to Google it and came up short. Sorry partner - I'll keep digging.

Are you wanting to try self publishing?
Oh, another option is lulu.com if you want to have someone else do the publishing.

the thing is, i already got a reply from a publisher down in georgia, but i'm wondering if there's anything i should know about negotiations before i fly down there... i've done everything so far without an agent, btw...

Have you asked your agent this question?

yea you may want to call up an agent and see if you can just consult with them for like an hour or something as opposed to actually highering one unless you feel you really need it. to get noticed and have someone be interested without an agent i would think is a pretty good accomplishment, so maybe there is no need to actually hire one, but if you can consult with one for a little bit maybe that will help.
just my opinion :-)

well, i'm not sure of the exact advance (it'll be $500 - 3k), but I know I'll get 15% of all retail in royalties with this publisher...

What is the topic of the book if I may ask. Also, you should think about getting it federally copyrighted so nobody steals anything from your work. Off topic but valuable info.

I'm getting a blog and I'll put some things up about the book as well as excerpts and maybe a chapter.
The thing with book publishers is that they understand that it is rightly yours, and they sign a confidentiality statement upon reviewing your manuscript...

I've self-published a book and have a literary agent right now. I'd be happy to offer advice. You can email me at michael@successmanifesto.com or call me at 917-523-5407.

Congratulations on the book deal. Whether it's BIG or small, it's still very impressive.
