for us, it starts aug. 29th, the first time ever our district starts in august, due to the new teachers' contract. however, the bona's contract clearly specifies that school starts in september, so I'll be showing up september 1.

I live in Georgia, and my county (Fulton) starts back August 15. Other counties in GA started August 1st, if you can believe that.

Do you mean that you all have a few months off in like December to January (Our winter your summer)? Or did everyone start their new school year a few weeks ago?

School starts in end of January/begining of Febuary.
and school finishes End of November/Begining of December...

Maybe schools just dont want students during the hottest part of the year...that could be why?

That makes sense to me, that or I think originally summer break was made so kids could help farm and harvest and stuff. Thats why all of the advocates for year-round school say summer break isn't needed anymore, because most people don't farm.

well, the heat raises crime, and even when it's -20 F outside, kids are still pretty ornery...

well, at least we're not in japan - those kids go 6 days a week, all year round, AND they have to do all of the janitorial work themselves... then again, we're not inventing robot dogs and car headlights that move with the road either....

This is true from what I understand, people around in my area are trying to push hard for year round schooling but it wont happen.

I head back to school (Radford University, VA) on Wednesday (the 10th) but clases dont start until the 22nd. For some reason the public schools around here always start the week right before the holiday, so you only go to school for 4 days and then get a 3 day weekend. It never made sense to me as to why they couldnt just push it back another few days. Oh well, I am out of those days...

I just don't see the appeal of year-round school. The only legitimate argument for it is that students forget everything over the summer (which is a little bit true, but not completely). That pales in comparison to the benefits of having that 10 to 12 week break though, both from students' and teachers' psychological standpoint and also economically. Year round school means its harder for stores to hire cheap summer labor, and amusement parks and beach motels and stuff get less business. So I think the status quo is fine.

They are testing year round schooling in some areas in Canada.

I think that the kids go three months, and then get two weeks off, all year.

It would really mess things up if you ask me.

I go back to Ohio State University on September 18 and classes start September 21st. We are on a quarter system, so we go to school for 10 weeks, get 3 1/2 weeks off (christmas) then 10 weeks, 1.5 weeks off (spring) then go for 10 weeks, and either take of the summer off for 3.5 months or go to summer quarter.

College has much more extensive breaks than high school- 3 and a half months of summer!?!
